Balmer Lawrie Container Depot, Visakhapatnam — depot operational areas
The project
Balmer Lawrie's container depot at Visakhapatnam needed paver pavement across its operational areas: M-50 grade, 100 mm thick, in the 100 × 200 mm brick shape, to IS 15658. Our scope covered the whole chain, from manufacturing the blocks to supplying and laying them.
Container depots are unforgiving. Reach stackers, trailers and forklifts load the surface unevenly, and water that sits on a pavement near the coast does no favours to the sub-base.
Why workmanship decided this job
On a depot, the difference between a pavement that lasts and one that needs attention in a year is often not the block. It is the gaps, the compaction, the levels and the lines. Get the levels wrong and water ponds. Leave the gaps inconsistent and the pattern opens up under turning loads.
Our crews laid to line and level, compacted, and spread and brushed jointing sand into the gaps before each area was handed over. It is slow, repetitive, unglamorous work, and it is the reason the pavement behaves under traffic.
